Enhancing the Quality of Science and Creating a Competitive Edge: A Research Presentation for Search Committees
University of Arizona
posted on 06/22/2009
Background: Women and minorities are underrepresented among faculty relative to their representation among graduates in many fields. Studies suggest that unconscious bias at each stage of the hiring process may influence the selection of women and minorities. This module presents scientific studies that provide evidence about how unconscious bias may influence evaluation of candidates. Designed to be presented to faculty search committees, it provides an opportunity for members to discuss how to overcome potential biases in their own processes.
The work
consists of an online presentation and four related documents. Those
documents are titled:
* "Practical Tips: Deepening the Pool"
*
"Practical Tips: Reducing/Eliminating Bias"
* "Interview Toolkit"
*
"Annotated Bibliography"
Content customization is possible pending further discussions with the OTT and the PI.
Applications:
* Any academic
organization seeking to improve its hiring processes by reducing and/or
eliminating unconscious bias
Advantages:
* Deliverable via the web
