Compositions Accelerating the Setting Time of Cements

posted on 10/20/2009

Portland cement has long been used as a component in various endodontic filling procedures. Newer Portland-type cements such as Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) have been developed specifically for clinical applications but their long setting times are viewed as a clinical shortcoming. As a result, many attempts have been made to develop an accelerant that will significantly reduce the setting time while maintaining and/or enhancing the biological and mechanical properties of such cements. Dentists from the University at Buffalo and the Autonomous University of Barcelona have developed a series of accelerants that, when added to Portland-type cements, result in initial setting times ranging from four to thirty minutes while also reducing the final setting time from an average of four hours to as few as ten minutes. In addition to the improved setting times, the increased compressive strength that results from the use of these accelerants appears to make them ideal additives for clinical applications using such cements.
