Nitric Oxide (NO) Releasing Technology

Central Michigan University
posted on 06/22/2009

Sustained and controlled release of nitric oxide over a prolonged time period

Suggested Uses

Coatings for medical devices to provide vasodilating function for extended period of time.

Transdermal patches to deliver nitric oxide – promote wound healing, treatment of circulatory impairment diseases such as diabetic leg ulcers, possible alternative to nitroglycerin to avoid build up of nitrate tolerance

Advantages

Polymeric nitric oxide donor chemistry with the following features:
… Direct generation of nitric oxide with higher purity than current NO gas delivery environments
… Controlled and sustained delivery rate measured for 30 days
… NO delivery activity extrapolated to 5 years
… Amount and the rate of NO delivery can be varied and controlled
… NO delivery can be localized or site specific
… After NO release, the resulting amines (polymeric and low molecular weight) can be re-nitrosated

Innovation Details

Detailed Description

The invention provides nitric oxide (NO)-releasing polymers and low-molecular-weight compounds. NO can act as both a free radical producer and scavenger, and is involved in cell signaling. In addition, NO plays a role in the pathogenesis of several diseases that is of interest to the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. These materials are capable of delivering nitric oxide directly to biological systems over longer periods of time at a controlled rate.
