SW-5 A Gene Conferring Resistance to Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus

Innovation Details

Detailed Description

This technology includes Sw-5, a natural plant resistance gene against Tospovirus. Transformation of Sw-5 into susceptible tomato varieties has generated plants with broad-spectrum resistance to Tospoviruses, including Tomato spotted wilt virus, Tomato chlorotic spot virus and Goundnut ringspot virus.

Potential Applications
  • Plant virus resistance
Advantages
  • Genetic resistance is the best way to protect plants from tospovirus infection because it eliminates the use of harmful chemicals and reduces the development of resistance to pesticides.
