Iridium-Based Data Communication System

University of Kansas
posted on 10/25/2005

This technology uses multilink point-to-point protocol (MLPPP) over the Iridium satellite system to provide access to the internet from all over the world. Multiple satellite (Iridium) links are combined to aggregate their bandwidth. It facilitates communication and web access from remote places where conventional facilities do not exist (like Polar regions).

Suggested Uses

Provide communication and web access from remote places where conventional facilities do not exist, i.e., polar regions

Detailed Description

This technology uses multilink point-to-point protocol (MLPPP) over the Iridium satellite system to provide access to the internet from all over the world. The Iridium satellite system is the only system with true pole-to-pole coverage, but it was designed to provide primarily voice service. In our system, multiple satellite (Iridium) links are combined to aggregate their bandwidth. It facilitates communication and web access from remote places where conventional facilities do not exist (like Polar regions).
