Microstrip RFID Tags using Virtual Short Circuit

A microstrip RFID tag is comprised of an antenna, matching circuit, integrated circuit (IC), substrate, and ground plane. For low manufacturing cost, the antenna, matching circuit, and IC are all on the same plane. The ground plane is separated by the substrate. Using a microstrip antenna, one can construct an RFID tag that works on otherwise difficult-to-tag materials such as metal or water.

Suggested Uses

Many, including tagging cell phones forrestricted areas. Some cell phones can only be tagged where the phone antenna exists,others offer no place to tag, and still others use metallic paint, which eliminates the use ofUHF RFID. This technology could meet those requirements.
