Method for Growing Epitaxail III-Nitrate Semiconductor Compounds on Substrates
Lehigh University Office of Technology Transfer
posted on 05/17/2010
Description:
Lehigh has developed a process that avoids etching and allows a very thin low temperature GaN (gallium-nitrate) buffer layer when making epitaxial III-Nitrate based LEDs. A consequence of this method is a dramatically reduced pitch size with a corresponding leap of almost 40% in LED output power. This methods saves between 30 to 45 minutes of manufacturing time by removing the need for an etch-back and recovery process. It also improves the reliability and quality of the final product. It differs from the Nanoheteroepithaxy process because that method has not been shown to simplify the GaN manufacturing process.

The Market
The SSL market is predicted to reach $33 billion by 2013 with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.67%. [1] This market is an umbrella market for LEDs, OLEDs, and PLEDs. LED technologies make up a majority of this market ($5.08 billion), with a growth rate of over 24%.[2] The OLED market is also predicted to grow at a considerable rate, about 24.7%, with a market size of $730 million. [3] Twenty-two percent of the United States electricity is consumed by lighting, which costs consumers over $50 billion each year. SSL technologies have the potential to reduce this consumption by up to six times less. This potential has led to increased market need, funding resources and science centers dedicated to SSL development, such as the $46 million Energy Frontier Research Center (EFRC) for solid-state lighting science funded by the Department of Energy.
