White Light-Emitting Diodes

Lehigh University Office of Technology Transfer
posted on 06/11/2011

Description:

Lehigh has developed a process to produce a Group III Nitride LED yielding a broad spectrum of warm white light. This warm white light results with the preferred broadband and super continuum spectrum for applications in residential lighting. The process is compatible with current LED manufacturing techniques and may reduce manufacturing costs over current products. A provisional patent application, 61/420,859 has been filed for this technology

The Market

The SSL market is predicted to reach $33 billion by 2013 with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.67%. [1] This market is an umbrella market for LEDs, OLEDs, and PLEDs. LED technologies make up a majority of this market ($5.08 billion), with a growth rate of over 24%.[2] The OLED market is also predicted to grow at a considerable rate, about 24.7%, with a market size of $730 million. [3] Twenty-two percent of the United States electricity is consumed by lighting, which costs consumers over $50 billion each year. SSL technologies have the potential to reduce this consumption by up to six times less. This potential has led to increased market need, funding resources and science centers dedicated to SSL development, such as the $46 million Energy Frontier Research Center (EFRC) for solid-state lighting science funded by the Department of Energy.
