Precise Sensing Diaphragm

Louisiana State University
posted on 08/18/2011

This invention is an innovative type of sensing diaphragm that can be incorporated into a sensor. The advanced design allows it to detect pressure changes as small as one Pascal. The diaphragm can be micrometer sized and can sense the differential pressure between two points in both air and liquid media. The materials used in the diaphragm are low cost and biocompatible. Though experiments have focused on pressure, this invention also has potential to measure other forces like strain. The technology can be used to easily manufacture diaphragms of various sizes and patterns for different sensitivities depending on the application.

Suggested Uses

Implantable medical devices; Vacuum pressure sensing; Home security systems; Gas reaction control; Underwater sensing

Advantages

Very sensitive (measures a one Pascal change); Excellent resolution and precision; Simple, low cost fabrication; Versatile and adaptable
