Synthesis of Free Radical UV-Curable Coatings of Acrylated Epoxidized Sucrose Soyate and Its Coating Performance

Highly functionality unsaturated fatty acid molecules were epoxidized and then reacted with acrylic acid to form acrylate functional compounds. Resins were synthesized where all of the epoxy groups were reacted with acrylic acid and also where only a portion of the epoxy groups were reacted. UV-curable formulations were prepared using acrylate diluent resins and a photoinitiator. Coatings were prepared and cured using UV light. Coatings made using the resins of the invention were harder and less flexible than coatings made frm a commercially available acrylated epoxidized soybean oil.
