Thermo Tribometer- Model TT-100 Tribometer

Northeastern Pennsylvania Technology Institute
posted on 10/03/2009

Friction is the force that resists motion. Friction and wear could damage machinery components, yet friction force is routinely relied on to accomplish a variety of tasks. ThermoTribometer is an instrument that test suitability of materials for tribological applications.

Suggested Uses

The thermo tribometer Model TT-100 would be in the medical industry, food industry, and gas compressors manufacturing.

Advantages

The thermo tribometer simultaneously measures both friction and friction generated temperature rise of plastic sliding dry (unlubricated) against metal.

Innovation Details

Detailed Description

The Thermo tribometer is especially designed to detect and measure friction-generated temperature rise under dry sliding conditions. Such conditions exist in plastic bearing for consumer appliances, plastic industrial gears, and bearing pads for artificial hips and knees. In the thermo tribometer no ambient heat is applied. Rather, heat is generated at the sliding interface between plastic and metal. Using the thrust washer configuration ( ASTM D-3702), the thermo tribometer provides a convenient way of assessing the suitability of various plastics sliding against a range of metals.
