• Lower loss (compared to double negative-index materials)
• Low power consumption
• Increased efficiency of optical nonlinear processes

Innovation Details

Detailed Description

The invention is made up of a tapered waveguide clad with a single negative material that slows or stops electromagnetic waves. This waveguide can be used from microwave up to ultraviolet frequencies, and is designed to slow and trap light.

The ability to slow or stop light is crucial for the realization of all-optical integrated circuitry. The proposed structure is simpler to achieve than the current standard (double negative metamaterials), has a small footprint, and can be incorporated into ultra-compact on-chip optoelectronics. Analytical results have been confirmed by FDTD simulations.
