University of Rochester
posted on 06/15/2010

A novel and convenient device to disinfect stethoscope heads.

Suggested Uses

The potential for nosocomial infection due to the use of stethoscopes from patient to patient has been widely recognized. Studies have shown that stethoscopes could harbor Staphylococcus aureus Recommended disinfection procedure is before and after each use. Disinfection, even with commonly available alcohol wipes, is generally not followed. An easier to use method is needed especially for hospitals and clinics to comply with the recommended disinfection procedure.

Advantages

This invention is a device that provides a simpler, easier to use and cost effective solution for stethoscope disinfection. It will overcome tendency for non-compliance and will also be effective against most types of pathogens. This device would allow the clinician to quickly disinfect his/her stethoscope before and/or after use. It could be set on a counter-top or be wall-mounted for easy access. The device can be operated by one hand and eliminates the need to withdraw and apply protective covers or physically wipe the diaphragm surface with disinfecting materials.
