Intraluminal Endoscopic Colectomy (IEC) Kit

posted on 01/30/2012

The traditional method of colon resection requires entering the abdominal wall and manipulation of other viscera. That results in increased immune response, risk of ileus, wound infection, hernia and adhesions leading to increased complications, recovery time and cost as well as body scarring. This invention is a low risk low cost therapeutic procedure for performing colectomy without penetrating the abdominal wall and may have applications in a variety of other procedures.

Advantages

This novel device and surgical procedure will allow removal of part of a colon without penetrating the abdominal wall. It would result in decreased complications, recovery time and cost as well as better aesthetics. The invention would also be applicable to other procedures such as correcting intra-procedural complications (perfs, etc.) from upper and lower GI that would otherwise be OR emergencies and would conceivably be able to be corrected in the endo-lab. Additionally, removal of mucosal lesions that would require dissecting through to the adventia could be performed by GI endoscopists instead of surgeons. The device could also be of utility to Gyn surgeons performing minimally invasive procedures.
