Biomimetic Coatings & Scaffolds for Orthopedic Applications
University of Connecticut
posted on 05/16/2011
This portfolio includes biomimetic coating ceramic coatings as well as some polymer based electrospun scaffold materials. The coating method results in a gradient coating with a dense coating at the surface of the metal substrate for good adhesion, but a more open structure away from the interface to enable infiltration and growth of osteoblasts for improved integration. The gradient coating also allows for loading of growth factors or other active agents. The electrospun scaffold incorporates hydroxyapatite particles in the fiber which are aligned parallel to the axis of the fiber similar to the natural structure of bone.
Suggested Uses
Coatings for metal devices for bone fixation, such as pins, rods, plates or screws. Biocompatible scaffold materials for bone growth and healing.
