Detailed Description

One of the most unfortunate trends in terms of accessibility in wireless technology is the push for smaller devices, as this precludes their use by many individuals with disabilities.

Researchers at the University of California , San Diego , have designed and built a prototype system composed of software and custom hardware which permits users with motor impairment to use commodity wireless, mobile electronic devices such as cellular phones and personal digital assistants. This approach permits wireless control of a mobile computing platform. By keeping the amount of custom hardware low and leveraging the programmability and open APIs of next-generation commodity wireless devices, production costs can be minimized. Technical detail of the design is available, and the technology is presently available for licensing.
