Electronic Physician Professional Evaluation Tool

posted on 10/24/2011
Hospitals and practicing physicians have a broad range of standards, accreditation and compliance regulations they must abide by. For large academic hospitals, such as the teaching hospital at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), conforming to these rules is an onerous process and can be extremely resource intensive. Indeed, at UCSF, practicing physicians perform ongoing professional practice evaluations (OPPE) every six months and are measured against a set of metrics including case characteristics and volume, patient safety, as well as inpatient and outpatient utilization. Many hospitals have begun to streamline this task by incorporating electronic medical records and data collection. However, the review and approval component by the Department Chairs and Division Chiefs still typically uses a paper-based approach, resulting in the generation of large quantities of documents that need to be physically signed, tracked and maintained.
Suggested Uses
- Regulation and accreditation compliance
- Medical practice management and evaluation
- Healthcare staff credentials surveillance
Advantages
- Increased efficiency of standards compliance
- Easy tracking of evaluations competency
- Improved use of personnel and resources
- Elimination of paper waste
- Space and cost savings
Detailed Description
Researchers at UCSF have designed a comprehensive web-based OPPE tool to significantly improve the efficiency of the entire process. This new software application allows medical staff to easily and comprehensively manage all phases of the process, from the initial data collection segment through to the review and approval component. The system is entirely paperless, providing a user-friendly electronic interface at all stages. Indeed, this new approach results in highly significant savings, both in terms of time and valuable resources.
