Thoracic Oncology Program Database Project eVelos (Oracle) Database Standard Operating Procedure

University of Chicago
posted on 02/21/2011

Standard Operating Procedure for curating thoracic oncology clinical research data in the Oracle-based eVelos system.

Suggested Uses

The SOP provides data structures that facilitate the organization, analysis, and collaborative sharing of oncology clinical research data.

Advantages

The Oracle-based eVelos system provides an ideal storage forum for the translational research thoracic oncology database because of Velos’s centralized storage, the ability for an approved researcher to access the data remotely, and for its ability to provide an audit trail to ensure HIPAA compliance.

Detailed Description

Ravi Salgia and colleagues at the University of Chicago have developed a standard operating procedure (SOP) for use with the eVelos (Oracle) system specifically formatted for use in thoracic oncology clinical research. This ready-to-use SOP contains forms that gather clinical data and clinical research information. Users can readily customize the fields for their specific area of study, although the existing SOP includes a highly detailed taxonomy that is easy to navigate and simplifies the management and presentation of clinical data. The Oracle-based forms are designed to be utilized in both clinical and clinical research settings. This SOP complements our previous Microsoft Access database template, which may be licensed through this iBridge portal.

SOP Features:

  • Detailed, longitudinal capture of patient biometric data, medical history information
  • Detailed environmental exposure information
  • Clinically relevant molecular marker annotation
  • Seamless data transfer to and from Excel files.
  • SOP for data entry

Potential Applications

  • Ability to understand the interplay between molecular classification and response to treatments
  • Multi-investigator data-sharing
  • Rapid report generation through user-developed queries

Diagnosis Form: cancer site, histology, stage, grade, recurrence, vital status

Chemotherapy Form: chemotherapeutic agents given, dose, duration, toxicity

Radiation Therapy Form: type of therapy, dose, duration, toxicity

Surgery Form: type of surgery, result of surgery

Exposures and Comorbities Form: medical comorbidities, smoking history, alcohol history, asbestos exposure, radiation exposure, immunosuppresion

Molecular Classification Form: mutation, translocation, amplification, and expression data for clinically relevant molecular markers
