High Temperature, Linear, Solid-state Sensor

posted on 07/05/2009

For many sensor applications, linear magnetoresistance (MR) can enable simpler and more accurate devices than those built from materials with non-linear responses. Unfortunately the MR of most materials is quadratic. While some materials with linear MR have previously been found, they have not been made from commonly used semiconductors or they have not functioned above low temperatures. In exploring MR properties of semiconductors Prof. Thomas F. Rosenbaum and Dr. Jingshi Hu have found two approaches to prepare indium antimonide (InSb) with a linear MR over a wide range of temperatures and field strengths.

Suggested Uses

-- Rotational speed sensors -- Electrical current sensors -- Angular position sensors -- Relative positioning sensors -- Detection of magnetic objects and fields

Advantages

-- Linear response -- High and low temperatures -- Common semiconductor material
