Lactoferrin can be used to regulate blood coagulation by inhibiting and/or regulating anticoagulant activity, including the neutralization of heparin.

Innovation Details

Detailed Description

A patient receiving cardiopulmonary bypass, cardiac catheterization, and hemodialysis is administered heparin when undergoing such surgical procedures to “thin” the patient’s blood. A second compound is typically then administered following completion of the surgical procedure to neutralize the heparin. TheN-terminus of lactoferrin, an iron-binding protein contains heparin-binding consensus sequences. Lactoferrin or polpeptides derived from the N-terminus can be used to regulate blood coagulation by inhibiting and/or regulating anticoagulant activity, including the neutralization of heparin.
