A coaxial cable Bragg grating with periodic discontinuities along the sensor access
Suggested Uses
• Structure corrosion evaluation
• Water pollution monitoring
• Oil leakage detection
Advantages
• Use of coaxial cable provides a more robust sensor than fiber optic
• Effective to a distance of a few hundred meters
• Flexible
• Compressible
• Can be used for many different application, strain, stress, chemical and more
Detailed Description
This invention describes a coaxial cable sensor made with periodic structures fabricated along a coaxial cable. The sensor can be used to measure temperature, pressure, strain, and acoustic waves. More importantly, various materials and chemicals can alter the perturbations resulting from the periodic structures, and thus the sensor is useful in applications such as water pollution monitoring, corrosion sensing, or oil pipe leakage detection. Due to its effectiveness and robustness, the device is especially attractive for structural, down hole or under water applications.
