Method of Oil Recovery

University of Pittsburgh
posted on 06/30/2009

This technology consists of a composition of networked polymeric gels that can be used in oil field recovery.

Suggested Uses

  • Enhanced oil recovery

Advantages

  • Polymeric gels are able to withstand high temperatures
  • Polymeric gells are able to withstand high salt content/salinity
  • Small amount of the polymer increases viscosity thus reducing costs
  • Polymers are water soluble reducing environmental concerns

Innovation Details

Detailed Description

A composition includes water having a salinity of at least 1 ppt, at least one hydrophilic polymer containing primary (—NH.sub.2) and/or secondary (—NHR) amine groups and at least one saccharide containing a reducible function. A method of changing the permeability of a subterranean formation includes the step of injecting into a subterranean formation a composition comprising water, at least one hydrophilic polymer containing at least two groups which are independently the same or different a primary amine group or a secondary amine group and at least one saccharide containing a reducible function.
