Invention Summary
A program for identifying families at risk for a variety of chronic diseases was implemented in Utah in 1983 and has continued through 2006 using a paper-based data collection, resulting in more than 1 Million entries from 150,000 families. The investigators are now implementing a web-based tool which can be used as part of a genetics educational package throughout the United States. Although the software is designed for use by secondary education classes, it can also be developed for use by any health care provider or for anyone wishing to study their genealogical records and personal health risks based on their own family¿s medical history.
Market Applications
The Health Family Tree was developed as a method for providing families with information regarding their own genetic predispositions towards disease, and how their lifestyle can influence the onset of disease. People who learn they are at risk for heart disease, for example, can take steps to improve their diet under the guidance of their physician.
Features and Benefits
*Individuals will become more aware of their family health history *The tool provides education on genetics *In some cases, the information may prompt individuals to seek medical guidance and/or assistance from a genetic counselor
IP Status
A copyright on the Health Family Tree base software has been filed with the USPTO. The web-based tool will also be available under a software license from the University.
