Detailed Description

Vanderbilt researchers have described a unique pathoangiogenic target, HP59, which is recognized by a toxin from Group beta-hemolytic Streptococcus bacteria (GBS toxin), named CM101, as it entered clinical trials in cancer patients. This group has shown that the GBS toxin/CM101 target, HP59, a unique membrane protein, is only present in pathological vasculature. Monoclonal antibodies generated against this target recognize pathologic vasculature in all mentioned disease processes and constitute potential diagnostic and therapeutic agents, which may offer protection against diseases, which have HP59 positive pathologic vasculature in common. These include malignant tumors, atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, keloids, osteoarthritis, diabetic ulcers and chronic wounds.
