Multi-Plug Design Insole to Reduce Plantar Pressure

Washington University in St. Louis
posted on 09/15/2008

High peak plantar pressures (PPP) during walking can contribute to painful forefoot syndromes, such as metatarsalgia, in otherwise healthy people, and to skin breakdown in people with conditions such as diabetes and peripheral neuropathy. During walking, normal and shear stresses develop which may lead to serious damage in the neuropathic foot and irritation and pain in the otherwise healthy individual. Investigators have developed an insole that reduces foot pressures and stress associated with normal activity or as a result of disease conditions.

Suggested Uses

• Off-the-shelf insole for plantar pressure relief from normal activity
• Over-the-counter insole to relieve common pressure points associated with disorders
• Custom insole for patients with diabetes or peripheral neuropathy

Advantages

• More effective at reducing PPP compared to other standard treatments
• Versatility in design (custom or over-the-counter insoles)

Detailed Description

Multiple, compressible plugs having a specific shape and size are inserted into a larger insole in a manner that limits the occurrence of secondary pressure peaks arising at the plug-insole boundary. The multi-plug insole design offers the flexibility to create a custom insole using plugs of varying stiffness and size to relieve individual stress patterns or an off-the-shelf multi-plug insole using plugs of specific stiffness and pattern that would provide pressure relief from normal activities such as walking or running.
